Mapping for Notetaking

Mapping can be a very useful technique for notetaking.

First, you determine the main idea, thesis, or theme of the text you are reading.

Draw a circle and put an abbreviated version of the main idea there.

Next, you determine main supporting details.

Draw squares connected to the main idea by a line and put the main supporting details there

Finally, you determine secondary supporting details.

Draw rectangles and put the information there.

Remember to abbreviate, summarize, and paraphrase whenever possible in your notetaking.
